Over the past year, the financial services industry has witnessed a growing debate around generative AI and its potential to support fraud. Several viral posts and articles have claimed that an AI-generated passport was able to pass a platform's KYC verification, sparking both alarm and skepticism. Some have countered that tools like ChatGPT can’t edit official documents or generate biometric features required by secure onboarding systems.

And both sides have a point.

While it’s true that ChatGPT and similar language models don’t directly create official passports or edit government-issued documents, the broader concern goes far beyond just one fake passport. Generative AI tools — including image generators, document builders, and deepfake technologies — can and are being used to create realistic supporting documents like proof of address, rental agreements, employment contracts, and bank statements — all of which are commonly required in KYC and Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) processes.

The Emerging Threat of Synthetic KYC

The reality is, we’re already seeing attempts at synthetic identity creation. Fraudsters are no longer showing up with photocopies of poorly forged IDs — they’re submitting professionally generated files that look and feel real, even under scrutiny. A fake tenancy agreement from an actual address, a utility bill with the correct formatting, or even a fabricated employment letter — all of these are now being built in minutes using generative AI tools available to anyone online.

Even if some of the recent viral claims remain anecdotal or unverified, the threat is real. Generative AI poses a legitimate and growing risk to KYC frameworks, particularly when onboarding is heavily reliant on automated document verification systems without sufficient human oversight.

Why It’s Not Just About the Documents

KYC and onboarding have always involved a mix of verification and trust. But that trust can no longer be placed in documents alone. In an age where virtually any document can be forged using off-the-shelf tools, the real question becomes: What is this customer trying to do? Is the behavior behind the transaction consistent? Are there hidden risk indicators beneath the surface?

That’s why the responsibility of Compliance and Risk Management teams has never been more critical — and never more complex.

A Call to Action for Compliance Professionals

Whether or not every story about AI-generated passports is true, what’s undeniable is that fraud is evolving — and so must we. Here’s how Compliance and Risk functions should respond:

  • Shift Focus from Documents to Behavior: Documents can be faked. Behavioral anomalies — like multiple accounts from the same IP, frequent transfers to high-risk jurisdictions, or erratic login times — are harder to fake and easier to track if your systems are built for it.
  • Update KYC Protocols: Traditional document-based checks must be complemented with digital footprint analysis, biometric verification, and geolocation analytics. A proof of address alone is no longer proof of identity.
  • Involve Human Intelligence: Automated tools have their place, but humans must stay in the loop, especially for higher-risk customers. Intuition, curiosity, and experience are irreplaceable.
  • Test Your Own Systems: Create synthetic fraud scenarios internally. Can your current controls detect an AI-generated lease agreement or a fabricated pay slip? If not, it’s time to evolve.
  • Collaborate Across Departments: Fraud isn’t just a compliance issue — it’s an enterprise-wide risk. Engage your cybersecurity, tech, and operations teams to build holistic, AI-resilient systems.

Conclusion: Stay Skeptical, Stay Ready

There may be debate about whether generative AI can pass official KYC checks today — but that debate shouldn't delay action. Whether it’s possible now or soon, the direction is clear: Fraud is becoming smarter, more digital, and more deceptive. That’s why our risk strategies must be proactive, not reactive. We may not be able to stop generative AI from being misused — but we can strengthen our defenses, elevate our awareness, and ensure we never rely on documents alone to trust a customer.
